Houseleek Face Mask

A recent report said that ‘masks’ are the most searched-for skincare term on Google, they’re certainly hugely popular as a way to care for and soothe skin and as a simple self-boosting treat.

I’ve suggested using green clay (otherwise known as fullers earth) but you could also use other clays (white kaolin, pink clay or bentonite). Clays are full of trace minerals and have been used in skincare for as long as we’ve been human. They gently absorb fat and dirt from the skin without harming the structure.

If you aren’t able to get hold of any cosmetic clays, a combination of equal parts houseleek gel and honey can make a very simple mask but adding the clay makes a great mask, especially for oily skins.

To make your mask:

Start by infusing mint leaves (or a peppermint teabag) in a cup of boiling water.

Use a blender or pestle and mortar to blitz your house leek leaves and then sieve to extract the juice, you want about a tablespoon.

Put 1 tablespoon green clay in a small bowl, add your houseleek juice and then take a tablespoon of the mint infusion and add little at a time, you may not need it all.

Keep stirring as you combine the ingredients into a thick paste, then add one or two drops of lavender essential oil.

Now your mask is ready to use. Apply it thinly to your face, using a brush or your fingers. If you have areas that are particularly prone to congestion – perhaps the central panel of your face, or chin – add a double layer.

Leave for 10 minutes, or until it starts to dry, then rinse off with warm water.

It’s good to spritz with a refreshing spray afterwards.
