Houseleek was one of the most cherished cosmetic herbs of Ninon de l’Enclos who, up to her death at the age of 91, was still called ‘the woman who never grew old’ and who, even in her 80’s, was managing to attract ardent young lovers. She almost committed incest with her grandson at the age of seventy and by all accounts led an exciting and scandalous life as a courtesan, gourment and friend to Moliere, Voltaire and Scarron.
She was aware that skin can really benefit from the soothing and healing application of the natural gel found in the leaves of succulent plants.
Houseleeks were her answer because she lived in a temperate climate and needed to use the plants that grew around her.
